Mobile Technology Award

sponsored by Box Technologies
Presented to the local authority or central government department that has implemented a mobile strategy that can demonstrate either: benefits to citizens through increased access to services, or; benefits to the organisation through increased efficiencies.

2011 Winner: Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council - SARAH Mobile working initiative
SARAH was developed in an inclusive manner led by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council in partnership with CACI and in consultation with home carers, unions and IT staff to design a product that would allow the removal of paper timesheets. The homecare management software solution is deployed on smart phones allowing Carers to download their specific service user schedules whilst also providing them with contextual information and prompts for each visit. As changes occur, these can be relayed immediately to the carer and vice versa.

Commended: North Yorkshire Police - NYP Mobile app
North Yorkshire Police website analytics showed that increasing numbers of users were accessing the site with mobile phones. This led to the development of NYP mobile - an application for smartphones, offering convenient access to a range of information. Open source software was used to build NYP mobile in-house, and then link it to existing content on the website. This meant it could be delivered it in a matter of weeks, at zero cost. As well as accessing crime prevention advice and the latest witness appeals, phones equipped with sat nav technology can be used to find their local police station.

Commended: Kent County Council - Explore Kent app
The innovative ‘Explore Kent’ app offers a simple and new way to explore the Kent countryside and coast. Users can download walking and cycling routes direct to their phones and track and share routes with friends. Bringing together a range of satellite, terrain and mapping plus detailed text route descriptions, the app is easy to use and was developed by the Countryside Access Service in partnership with web technology company, EveryTrail.

Commended: Directgov - Travel News app
Back in 2009, Directgov and Transport Direct teamed up to create a mobile application that would provide news to travellers in the UK about transport related issues. As well as updates about traffic jams on motorways and major routes, the app also can alert those travelling by train, tube, ferry and tram about delays and service disruption.
The app also uses a Google Maps interface to plot each delay or disruption type. Users can then select each delay for more detailed information.

Commended: Aylesbury Vale District Council - information by sms
AVDC has developed a sophisticated text alert system which allows residents and businesses access to a huge range of information, such as refuse and recycling dates, details of sports and after school activities, details of holiday play schemes, information about parking, reminders about benefits and recruitment information such as interview reminders. Numbers have grown over a period of a year to 8,324 subscribers without any marketing. The project has seen AVDC successfully engage with young people.
